Police found the teenager’s mother and younger brother dead at their Acton home before locating him in his mother’s car
A 17-year-old Indian-origin teenager has been charged with allegedly killing his mother and younger brother at their home in Acton, Massachusetts, in a case that has drawn further attention after investigators said he had used the internet and ChatGPT to search for “theoretical ideas or fantasies” about killing his family.
Arjun Aravind was arrested early Wednesday after an overnight manhunt. He faces two counts of murder, along with multiple assault and battery charges and charges related to the alleged unauthorised use and theft of a motor vehicle.
Mother and brother found dead at family home
Police were alerted after a tutor arrived at the family’s Martha Lane residence shortly after 6:30 pm on Tuesday and could not make contact with anyone inside. Aravind’s father, who had been unable to reach his family, then contacted police and requested a welfare check.
Officers found 45-year-old Sudha Venkatesan and her 14-year-old son Siddarth Aravind dead inside the house. Police said both victims had suffered obvious trauma, while the exact cause and manner of death and the weapon, if any, remain under investigation.
Teen fled in mother’s car
Investigators said Arjun was not at the residence when police arrived and had allegedly left in his mother’s Honda Accord.
Authorities launched a search and alerted other law-enforcement agencies. He was eventually located early Wednesday in nearby Wayland after police responding to an unrelated parking-lot alarm found the vehicle with Arjun inside. He was taken into custody without incident.
What investigators found in ChatGPT history
The case took another disturbing turn after investigators examined Arjun’s online activity.
According to the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office, the teenager had recently displayed concerning behaviour and had used the internet and ChatGPT to search for theoretical ideas or fantasies involving the killing of his family.
Investigators also said he had asked the AI chatbot to help create “Gothic novel-kind of stories”, including questions and fictional characters.
Authorities have not said that these searches, by themselves, establish a motive for the killings.
Murder case moves to adult court
Although Arjun is 17, the murder charges are expected to be handled in adult court because the juvenile court does not have jurisdiction over a murder charge in Massachusetts.
He was expected to be arraigned on the murder and related assault charges in Concord District Court.
The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities yet to determine the precise circumstances and motive behind the deaths.
