Why did Jaya Bachchan object to being addressed as ‘Shrimati Jaya Amitabh Bachchan’ in Parliament?

Actor-turned-politician Jaya Bachchan has once again grabbed headlines as she lost her cool in Parliament.

The Samajwadi Party (SP) MP was irked at being addressed as ‘Jaya Amitabh Bachchan‘ by Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh.

The video of Jaya Bachchan objecting to being addressed as ‘Jaya Amitabh Bachchan’ in the Parliament is going viral on social media.

Shrimati Jaya Amitabh Bachchan ji, please,” Harivansh Narayan Singh called out, prompting Jaya Bachchan to respond firmly, “Sir, sirf Jaya Bachchan bolte to kaafi hojata.”

Harivansh Narayan Singh then pointed out that her name is officially registered as Jaya Amitabh Bachchan in Parliament’s records. “Your full name was written here, I just repeated the same,” Singh said.

When he pointed out that her name was officially registered as such, she launched into a critique of the practice.

She further burst into anger and said, “Ye jo hain kuch naya tarika hain ki mahilaayen apne pati ke naam se jaani jaye. Unka koi astitva nahi. Unki koi upalabdh hi nahi hain, apne mein aur astitva nahi hain. Ye jo naya shuru hua hain, I just…” and stopped due to lack of words.

However, this is not the first time that Jaya has lost her cool. Several of her video clips have gone viral on social media, where she has been seen snapping at fellow MPs and reporters, and worse, cursing them.

Jaya Bachchan is now known for hitting the headlines for the wrong reasons—specifically because of behaviour issues in both Parliament and outside.

  1. This the prevailing culture of hiding identity, the claim to fame was not just out of talent but also out of the marital association in public life.
