
Two back-to-back earthquakes, measuring 4.9 and 4.8, hit J&K’s Baramulla district
The Kashmir Valley experienced a double tremor on Tuesday morning as two earthquakes shook the region in quick succession. According to the Meteorological Department, the quakes had magnitudes of 4.9 and 4.8 on the Richter scale but, however, no loss of life or property damage has been reported.
Emergency response teams and local officials remain on alert as a precautionary measure.
The first earthquake struck at 6:45 a.m. local time, registering 4.9 on the Richter scale. Its epicenter was located in Baramulla district, with coordinates at a latitude of 34.17 degrees north and longitude 74.16 degrees east. The quake originated at a depth of 5 kilometers beneath the Earth’s surface.
Just seven minutes later, at 6:52 a.m., a second earthquake hit the same region, measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale. The epicenter of this quake was slightly east of the previous one, with coordinates of latitude 34.20 degrees north and longitude 74.31 degrees east.
Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of the Meteorological Department, confirmed that while the quakes were felt across the valley, no immediate reports of casualties or structural damage have emerged. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely to ensure public safety and assess any potential impacts.
Residents of the Kashmir Valley experienced a brief but unsettling morning as the earthquakes rattled the area.
