From Blinkit to Country Club: Mumbai’s Latest Food Safety Casualties

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration, headed by Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, took action against eight food establishments in Mumbai on Sunday, suspending five licences and cancelling three others, alongside seizing prohibited food items worth Rs 2.22 crore, as part of a statewide crackdown ahead of the festive season.

    What was cancelled

Three establishments had their licences cancelled outright: Blinkit’s unit in Vile Parle, Copenhagen Hospitality in Vile Parle, and EatClub in Bandra West.

    What was suspended

Five establishments had their licences suspended after inspections found deficiencies relating to hygiene, food handling, storage, premises cleanliness and contamination-prevention measures: Cafe Sultan in Kalina, Lo Fresh Food Pvt Ltd in Marol, Country Club and Suraj Lama Momos in Andheri, and Cafe Pakeezah in Santacruz.

The FDA said no establishment was sealed and no vehicle was seized during Sunday’s action. Besides Mumbai, the authority also acted against hotels, restaurants, dhabas, clubs and bakeries across the Mumbai and Konkan divisions as part of the same drive.

    Part of a sustained crackdown

Sunday’s action adds to a months-long enforcement push under Commissioner Mundhe, who was appointed in May and has since overseen more than 12,000 inspections and raids, cancelling or suspending around 600 licences, sealing over 300 eateries, and issuing more than 5,000 improvement notices. His tenure has included cancelling licences of major chains such as Domino’s Pizza and Pizza Hut, as well as raids on ISKCON food establishments and facilities operated by Parle Agro, Blinkit and Zepto. Mundhe has previously said food businesses carry a responsibility toward the society they serve, framing the crackdown as part of a broader effort to improve food safety standards across the state rather than a series of isolated raids.
