Explosion at Valero refinery in Port Arthur sends plume of smoke into sky

A massive explosion rocked the Valero Port Arthur Refinery on Monday evening, triggering a fire and prompting authorities to issue a shelter-in-place alert for nearby residents.

According to reports, a loud blast was heard around 6:30 pm (local time), with tremors felt in surrounding areas including Port Arthur, Groves, and Nederland.

The fire broke out at a major oil processing facility operated by Valero Energy, which runs a 380,000-barrel-per-day refinery at the site.

    Thick smoke seen after explosion

Thick black smoke was seen billowing into the sky following the blast, while videos circulating on social media captured flames and a large plume rising above the refinery complex.

In response to the incident, the city of Port Arthur issued a shelter-in-place order for several nearby areas, including Sabine Pass, Pleasure Island, regions south of Highway 73, and areas west of Stilwell Boulevard, urging residents to remain indoors as a precaution.

    Cause not yet confirmed

Authorities said the cause of the explosion and the subsequent fire has not yet been confirmed. However, local police told media outlets that an industrial heater may have triggered the blaze.

There were no immediate reports of injuries, and officials have not yet disclosed the extent of damage to the facility.

Key refinery on Texas Gulf Coast

The Valero Port Arthur Refinery, located on the Texas Gulf Coast, lies about 90 miles east of Houston and is one of the major refining facilities in the United States.

The refinery can produce up to 435,000 barrels per day of gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel from heavy sour crude oil. It receives crude supplies via rail, pipelines, and marine docks, with refined products transported through pipelines and shipped from refinery docks.

Valero Energy had not issued an official statement on the incident at the time of reporting, and it remains unclear whether refinery operations have been affected.
