Lockdown in Mumbai if daily Covid cases cross 20,000-mark, says Mayor Kishori Pednekar

Amid a huge surge in COVID-19 cases in Mumbai which includes the Omicron variant, Mayor Kishori Pednekar has hinted at more stringent restrictions and lockdown in Mumbai.

Kishori Pednekar, the Mumbai mayor said,” we will have to impose lockdown in Mumbai if daily cases cross the 20,000 mark.”

Contrary to the Mumbai Mayor’s statement, earlier the Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope said that the imposition of lockdown in the state was not being discussed at present. “Decision of lockdown is not under discussion currently. The government will make a decision about restrictions by taking into consideration the case positivity rate, hospital bed occupancy, and oxygen consumption,” Tope said.

As the COVID-19 cases see a surge, the civic body has now made isolation mandatory for at least 10 days from the onset of symptoms or testing in the case of asymptomatic patients. Mumbai has a revised protocol regarding the sealing of buildings where coronavirus cases are found. The entire building or a wing of a building complex or a housing society will be sealed if COVID-19 cases are found in more than 20% of the occupied flats in that building or the wing of the building complex or society.

Mumbai to shut schools of all mediums for classes 1 to 9 and 11 till January 31. Students of classes 10 and 12 are excluded from this decision which means they can attend schools in person.

According to the Maharashtra government’s health department, 40 new cases of the latest Coronavirus variant Omicron have been reported in Mumbai pushing the number of infections to 368. On Monday Mumbai reported 8,082 COVID-19 cases, the highest daily count after April 18, 2021, taking the caseload beyond the 8-lakh mark.
