Baba Siddique succumbs to gunshot injuries in Mumbai; CM assures strict action against assailants

In a shocking incident, Baba Ziauddin Siddique, a senior leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), was shot dead near Nirmal Nagar in Bandra, Mumbai, on Saturday evening. The attack occurred around 9:30 PM when unidentified assailants opened fire as Siddique was outside his son and MLA Zeeshan Siddique‘s office, reportedly hitting him multiple times, including a shot to the chest. An aide standing nearby also suffered a gunshot wound to the leg.

While the motives behind the shooting remain unclear, initial suspicions point towards a possible business rivalry.

The shooting initially went unnoticed amid Dussehra celebrations, where firecrackers were being set off and crowds returned from political rallies. However, as the situation unfolded, his aides quickly rushed Siddique to Lilavati Hospital in Bandra, where he was declared dead on arrival.

The news of his death spread rapidly, prompting an influx of political figures, including leaders from the NCP and Congress, as well as his son, MLA Zeeshan Siddique, and Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, to the hospital.

According to police sources, two suspects were detained shortly after the shooting in Andheri East, and the Crime Branch has launched a thorough investigation into the incident. The investigation continues as authorities work to apprehend a third suspect who fled the scene.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde confirmed the detentions and expressed his condolences, labeling the incident as “extremely unfortunate.”

“This is an extremely unfortunate incident and I spoke to the doctors and police. Two people have been arrested, the accused are from UP and Haryana. The third accused is absconding. We have given instructions to Mumbai Police that strict action should be taken against those who take law and order into their hands…I am sure that Mumbai police will soon arrest the third accused…Strict action will be taken against the accused,” CM Shinde added.

Baba Siddique had recently switched allegiance from the Congress party to Ajit Pawar’s faction of the NCP in February, ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. His son, Zeeshan, is also anticipated to clarify his political stance soon in light of the upcoming state Assembly elections.
