Six critically affected infants shifted as authorities probe suspected ventilator blast

Three newborn babies died after a fire broke out in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the Amravati District Women’s Hospital in Maharashtra early Monday morning. Six other infants who were critically affected have been shifted to a nearby Super Speciality Hospital for further treatment.

The fire reportedly broke out around 3:30 am on the third floor of the government-run hospital after a ventilator exploded. At the time, 39 newborns were admitted to the Special Newborn Care Unit. Three infants died after suffering severe burns and smoke inhalation.

Hospital staff launch emergency evacuation

Doctors, nurses and other hospital staff immediately rushed to the affected ward and began evacuating the newborns. Medical equipment was disconnected as the infants were moved out of the fire-affected area. Six babies who were seriously affected were shifted to a Super Speciality Hospital for treatment.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances that led to the fire and the suspected ventilator blast. The tragedy has also raised fresh questions about fire safety and equipment preparedness in neonatal care units, where critically ill and highly vulnerable infants require constant medical support.

The incident comes just days after a separate NICU fire at a district hospital in Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh, where a newborn died and two others suffered burn injuries after a warmer machine reportedly caught fire.
