US cities witness rallies over persecution of minoities in Bangladesh
Peaceful demonstrations were held across major cities in the United States on Saturday to highlight alleged persecution of Hindu and other minority communities in Bangladesh, with organisers citing a rise in targeted violence in recent months.
Rallies took place in more than 22 cities, including Artesia in California, where hundreds participated in a morning march calling for international attention and protection for Bangladesh’s Hindu minority. Demonstrators held placards demanding justice and chanted “Om Shanti,” emphasising peace and non-violence.
Organisers said the protests were humanitarian in nature and aimed at drawing global attention to reports of attacks on Hindu homes, temples and businesses in Bangladesh, particularly incidents recorded during periods of political unrest and communal tension. Rights groups have documented cases of vandalism, arson and intimidation targeting Hindu, Buddhist and Christian communities.
“This is about ensuring the world does not ignore the suffering of vulnerable minorities,” said Geeta Sikand, a representative of the Global Coalition for the Protection of Hindus in Bangladesh. “We are calling for accountability, safety and peace.”
Demonstrations were also reported near university campuses and in cities across the West Coast, Midwest and Northeast, with participants braving harsh weather to underscore what they described as the urgency of the issue. Faith leaders from Jewish and other communities joined some rallies in solidarity.
Speakers at multiple locations referenced recent incidents in Bangladesh, including attacks on Hindu neighbourhoods and religious sites, and urged governments and international institutions to increase scrutiny and pressure for stronger protections of religious freedom. Some participants also reiterated calls for global recognition of atrocities committed against Hindus during the 1971 Liberation War.
