‘Institutions like UN are failing to fulfill their roles‘: PM Modi slams international organizations on Lex Fridman podcast
In a candid discussion with American scientist and podcaster Lex Fridman, Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized the United Nations (UN) and other international organizations, stating that they have become “almost irrelevant” due to their lack of reforms. The interview, conducted on Sunday, saw Modi reflecting on rising global conflicts, including the ongoing Middle East wars and tensions between the US and China.
PM Modi’s criticism of the UN and global institutions
During the interview, PM Modi expressed disappointment in international organizations like the UN, saying they have failed to uphold global peace and order.
“The international organizations that were created have become almost irrelevant, there is no reform in them. Institutions like the UN cannot play their role. People in the world who do not care about laws and rules are doing everything, and no one is able to stop them,” he said.
Lessons from COVID-19 and global uncertainty
Reflecting on the COVID-19 pandemic, Modi emphasized how the crisis exposed the limitations of all nations, regardless of their scientific or economic advancements. He noted that despite the expectation that the world would emerge from the pandemic with a renewed focus on peace and cooperation, global conflicts have only worsened.
“COVID-19 exposed our limitations. No matter how great or scientifically advanced a nation is, the pandemic brought everyone down to earth. Instead of learning from it, the world has moved towards uncertainty, and wars have only worsened the situation,” Modi told Fridman.
Call for cooperation over conflict
PM Modi advocated for a shift from conflict to cooperation, urging nations to prioritize development and collaboration over expansionism and rivalry. He emphasized that in an interdependent and interconnected world, no country can function in isolation.
“The world is interconnected and interdependent. Everyone needs everyone, and no nation can stand alone. In global forums, I see that everyone is concerned about conflicts. We hope for relief from them soon,” he added.
India’s push for a permanent UNSC seat
India has long been advocating for permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), arguing that the current structure, which was established in 1945, does not reflect 21st-century geopolitical realities.
New Delhi has asserted that the 15-member UNSC needs reforms to remain relevant in today’s world. India last held a non-permanent seat in 2021-2022 and has received support from the UK, France, and the US for its bid to become a permanent member.
Currently, the UNSC consists of five permanent members—Russia, the UK, China, France, and the United States—who hold veto power over substantive resolutions. In addition, there are 10 non-permanent members, elected for two-year terms by the UN General Assembly.
Modi’s call for UN reforms
This is not the first time PM Modi has called for UN reforms. Last year, during his address at the UN’s ‘Summit of the Future‘, he emphasized the need for global action that aligns with contemporary challenges.
“Reform is the key to relevance. Global action must match global ambition,” Modi stated in his UN General Assembly (UNGA) speech.
With rising global instability and shifting geopolitical dynamics, India’s push for UN reforms and a greater role in global decision-making continues to gain momentum.
