PM has directed a reduction in convoy vehicles and greater use of electric vehicles amid rising global energy concerns and fuel conservation efforts
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has ordered a reduction in the number of vehicles in his official convoy as part of a broader austerity and fuel conservation initiative amid rising global energy concerns.
The Prime Minister has also directed the Special Protection Group (SPG), which is responsible for his security, to increase the use of electric vehicles (EVs) in his convoy. However, he reportedly instructed that no new vehicles should be purchased specifically for this transition.
Sources said the SPG has started implementing the instructions while ensuring that all mandatory security protocols under the official ‘Blue Book’ guidelines remain fully intact.
The move comes amid growing concerns over global fuel prices and supply chain disruptions triggered by tensions in West Asia, particularly the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Iran.
The austerity message is also being reflected in several BJP-ruled states. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav have also reportedly decided to reduce the size of their official convoys.
The initiative is being viewed as part of the Centre’s wider appeal for responsible fuel consumption and reduction of avoidable expenditure.
Earlier this week, PM Modi urged citizens to adopt what he described as “nationally responsible” lifestyle choices to help India navigate global economic uncertainty, inflationary pressure and energy-related challenges.
Highlighting the importance of self-reliance, the Prime Minister questioned excessive dependence on imports and encouraged the use of locally manufactured products.
He also appealed to citizens to avoid non-essential gold purchases for a year to reduce pressure on foreign exchange reserves. In addition, he advised against unnecessary foreign travel and destination weddings abroad, urging people instead to explore domestic tourism and celebrate major occasions within India.
