Ayodhya witnesses historic moment as PM Modi hoists flag on Ram Mandir shikhar
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday hoisted the saffron flag atop the 191-foot-high shikhar of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh. The ceremony marked the completion of the temple’s main construction.
The saffron flag began flying atop the shikhar of the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple after PM Modi performed the ceremonial Dhwajarohan.
Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Modi said that India and the world had become “Ram-may,” describing the installation of the Dharma Dhwaja atop the Ram Temple as a moment that healed “wounds of centuries” and fulfilled a civilisational resolve carried forward for 500 years.
He made the following key points:
Every Ram bhakt’s heart, he said, was filled with deep satisfaction, immense gratitude, and divine joy as centuries-old wounds were healing.
He said the Dharma Dhwaja was not just a flag but a symbol of the rejuvenation of Indian civilisation. The saffron colour, the Suryavansh insignia, the word ‘Om’, and the Kovidara tree, he noted, represented the glory of Ram Rajya. The flag, he said, stood as a resolution, a success, a story of struggle, and the physical embodiment of hundreds of years of perseverance — and would continue to proclaim Shri Ram’s values for thousands of centuries to come.
Modi emphasised that Shri Ram never discriminated, and that the nation too was moving forward with this spirit. By 2047, when India completed 100 years of Independence, he said the country must ensure it had become fully developed.
He urged every citizen visiting the Ram Temple to also visit the Sapt Mandapam, noting that these mandaps strengthened the values of faith, friendship, duty and social harmony. Shri Ram, he said, united through emotion, not division, and valued devotion over lineage.
Referring to India’s cultural mindset, the Prime Minister recalled that in the coming decade, the nation must free itself from the mentality of slavery. He said that although India had attained independence, a sense of inferiority persisted, as many believed anything foreign was superior. Stressing that India was the “mother of democracy,” he said democracy was embedded in the nation’s DNA.
The rituals were carried out by 108 Acharyas from Ayodhya, Kashi and South India under the guidance of Kashi scholar Ganeshwar Shastri.
The placement of the triangular flag marked the formal completion of the Ram Mandir following the consecration of Ram Lalla in the garbhagriha in January 2024.
Ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit, security in Ayodhya had been significantly strengthened. A total of 6,970 security personnel — including ATS commandos, NSG snipers, cyber teams and technical staff — had been deployed across the city.
Many devotees had arrived at the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple on Monday for darshan of Shri Ram ahead of the flag-hoisting ceremony.
PM Modi and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat offered prayers at the Ram Darbar ahead of the flag-hoisting ceremony at the Ram Mandir, where nearly 7,000 guests are expected to attend the grand event.
The Ram Darbar, or Shri Ram’s court, depicts Shri Ram and Sita seated on a throne, with Hanuman and Bharat shown in a devotional posture at their feet. Lakshman and Shatrughan stand beside them as protective attendants.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi visited the Saptmandir within the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple complex to offer prayers before the ceremony. The Saptmandir comprises shrines dedicated to Maharshi Vashishtha, Maharshi Vishwamitra, Maharshi Agastya, Maharshi Valmiki, Devi Ahilya, Nishadraj Guha and Mata Shabari.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had led the consecration ceremony of the Ram Darbar earlier this year, on June 5.
