Mohali-type ‘rocket attack’ at police station in Punjab’s border Tarn Taran district

In an apparent ‘terror’ attack, a police station in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district was hit by a probable rocket-propelled grenade (RPG), officials said on Saturday.

The use of a sophisticated weapon like the RPG has hinted towards a terror angle, a senior police official admitted. A team from National Investigation Agency (NIA) is likely to visit Punjab’s Tarn Taran Sarhali Police Station officials said on Saturday

The incident took place at around 1 am, and as of now, there is no casualty reported. Some unidentified people fired the projectile at the police station located on the Amritsar-Bathinda highway in the border district, officials said.

At the time of the attack on Friday night, eight persons, including Station Head Official (SHO) Parkash Singh, were present at the police station. The rocket-launcher-type weapon first hit a pillar and then hit the police station; sources added. The windowpanes of the police station were damaged, besides its main entrance.

Senior police officials have reached the spot for investigation.

This was the second RPG attack on a police station in the state in seven months. Earlier, there was an RPG attack on Punjab Police’s Intelligence Wing headquarters in Mohali.

The BJP slammed the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), blaming them for the “worrying” law and order situation in the border state.

Jaiveer Shergill, National Spokesperson of BJP, tweeted, “Per media reports, Police Station in Tarn Taran attacked by rocket launcher type weapon! This is the 2nd RPG attack on a Police Station (Mohali on May 8) in 7 months. Very worrying & disturbing development! Law & order situation has been in a free fall since AAP formed Govt in Punjab.”

In another tweet, Jaiveer Shergill said, “AAP Punjab Govt “law & order” report card: 19 murders in first 21 days of Govt, Siddhu Moosewala shot dead, Recovery of RDX in Tarn Taran, RPG attack on Mohali Police Station, Murder of Shiv Sena Leader, Today rocket attack in Tarn Taran AAP is injurious for Punjab!
