They were also convicted of possessing weapons and financing terrorist operations in the kingdom
Saudi Arabia has executed five of its nationals over what it described as terrorism-related crimes, according to a statement from the kingdom’s Ministry of Interior on Saturday.
Who was executed and why
The ministry named the five men as:
- Muhammad bin Munir bin Muhammad Al-Zahir
- Ali bin Abdul Rab Al-Hussein Al-Sheikh
- Hassan bin Zaki bin Muhammad Al-Faraj
- Reda bin Muhammad bin Ali Al Abu Abdullah
- Ali bin Hassan bin Ahmed Al Rabah
According to the statement, which was posted on X, the men were convicted of joining a foreign terrorist organisation and of firing weapons and bombs at security forces, security headquarters and security vehicles. The charges also included possessing weapons and live ammunition, and providing financial support for terrorist operations inside the kingdom. The ministry said security authorities arrested the men, and investigations led to their indictment on these charges. One report says the executions took place in the Eastern Province.
What the statement doesn’t say
The ministry’s announcement did not name the foreign organisation, say when the men were arrested or give details of their trials. Saudi Arabia is known to apply the death penalty to a wide range of offences, including terrorism, murder and drug trafficking.
