Experts from IIT Kanpur praise UP govt’s handling of COVID-19 during second wave

A team of experts from IIT-Kanpur led by Manindra Agarwal, who is a scientist with IIT- Kanpur tasked to project the surge in Coronavirus cases, has released a research paper on the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government’s handling of the second wave of COVID-19, lauding its strategies to check the spread of infection. The team highlighted the measures taken by the Uttar Pradesh government during the deadly second wave that had claimed several lives and also pressurized the healthcare system across the country

As per their report and a detailed study by the researchers, it throws light on the steps taken by the state government to mitigate the impact of the economic crisis on migrant workers. The researchers praised the Yogi Adityanath government in the state for providing employment to migrant workers.

Uttar Pradesh is India’s most populous state with 240 million people. Home to every sixth Indian, if it was a separate country, it would be the fifth-largest by population in the world, just behind China, India, the US, and Indonesia – and bigger than Pakistan and Brazil.

Despite being the magnanimity and deceptive nature of the virus variant, the Uttar Pradesh state government readied itself with its excellent strategies to combat the spread of the virus.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and his administration faced the herculean storm and the only way to survive the storm for them was to face it head front. This is exactly what they did. Yogi Adityanath’s prior knowledge of handling encephalitis during his term as a five-time Member of Parliament from Gorakhpur proved useful.

Yogi Adityanath, who himself tested positive at the outset of the second wave, realized that handling this second wave might be the capstone of his decades in public life. A week after testing negative, Yogi Adityanath set himself on the ground and travelled within the state to oversee facilities in hospitals, talking with experts in the healthcare sector and checking on citizens. He had travelled to almost 8 divisional headquarters and personally reviewed 45 districts during his visit. – something which no other Chief Minister in the country had done.

The state had engaged experts from IIT-Kanpur to prepare the district-wise trajectory of the Covid curve using mathematical modelling to fine-tune its COVID-19 response. The state also built engagement with various groups of doctors, farmers, Nigrani Samiti, sportspersons, and religious leaders among others. UP constituted an expert committee of prominent doctors and held meetings for strategizing the containment of COVID-19. effectively managed to boost its oxygen supply from various sources (almost three times) from 350 MT to 1050 MT. In the first, Uttar Pradesh had set up an “Oxygen Monitoring System” for ‘real-time’ tracking of oxygen demand of hospitals and the distribution of oxygen supply.

Yogi Adityanath provided much-needed empathic leadership and effectively communicated key messages to the public. He called tackling the pandemic as the work of a unified “team of 24 crores”, which resulted in high public confidence and adherence to pandemic-control measures.

The state government aggressively followed the ‘Trace, Test and Treat’ mantra and ensured it reached the last mile. reaching the last mile.

Yogi Adityanath led the state government to initiate the world’s largest house-to-house surveillance of COVID-19 in rural areas to contain transmission by testing people with symptoms for rapid isolation, disease management, and contact tracing. The Government teams covered 97,941 villages in 75 districts for this activity.

The state already proved its mettle last year with the deft handling of the pandemic and mitigating the adverse economic effects.

Brazil, England, Spain, Italy, and France together have a 25.6 crore population equivalent to Uttar Pradesh population and yet these countries of Europe recorded total positive cases of 173.32 lakh while Uttar Pradesh recorded 10.3 lakh. Manindra Agrawal said that the pandemic has caused a lot of damage everywhere, UP has done well to avoid a much bigger calamity. The lockdown was imposed at the right time which slowed down the spread of the pandemic just when it was spreading to the villages. It helped reduce the peak infections by a factor of two as per our SUTRA model. Also, proactive steps were taken to rationalize the demand for oxygen through an audit resulting in 10% + savings.

The Prime Minister had praised the Yogi government for handling the Covid pandemic well in Uttar Pradesh.

In July, we saw Australian MP Craig Kelly lauding the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath for the work during the second wave of the Covid pandemic. The Australian MP went all praises for the leadership of Adityanath. Kelly went on to ask Adityanath to take over leadership in Australia and to “sort out the mess that state premiers in Australia had created”.

Earlier, the World Health Organization (WHO) had praised the Uttar Pradesh government’s model of surveillance, tracing, and testing of COVID-19 patients.
