Explosion rips through bar in luxury Swiss resort Crans-Montana, several dead
Several people were killed and many others injured after a powerful explosion ripped through a bar in the luxury Swiss ski resort town of Crans-Montana during New Year’s celebrations, Swiss police said early Thursday.
The blast occurred at around 1:30 am local time at Le Constellation bar, a popular venue with tourists, as revellers were ringing in the New Year. Confirming the incident, Wallis canton police spokesperson Gaetan Lathion told AFP, “There has been an explosion of unknown origin. There are several injured and several dead.” He added that emergency operations were still underway at the site.
Unverified images and videos circulating on social media showed flames and heavy smoke engulfing the bar following the explosion. While Swiss news outlet Blick reported that fireworks used during a concert may have sparked the fire, authorities said the exact cause of the explosion remains unclear and is under investigation.
Crans-Montana, located in the Valais region of the Alps about two hours from the Swiss capital Bern, is a well-known upscale ski destination, particularly popular with international tourists, including visitors from the UK. The resort town, which boasts nearly 87 miles of ski trails, is also scheduled to host a FIS World Cup speed skiing event later this month.
Police have cordoned off the area as forensic teams examine the scene. Further details on casualties and the cause of the blast are awaited.
