FIR against Shiv Sena corporator over assault on doctors at KDMC hospital

A Shiv Sena corporator has been booked after allegedly assaulting doctors and hospital staff at a civic-run hospital in Maharashtra’s Thane district, triggering widespread outrage within the medical community and prompting protests by healthcare workers.

The accused, Ramesh Mhatre, allegedly attacked doctors at the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC)-run Shastrinagar Hospital in Dombivli following an altercation over the treatment of a pregnant woman. Police have registered a case against Mhatre and several of his supporters.

    Altercation inside hospital

According to police, the incident began after the family of a pregnant patient was advised by doctors to shift her to another medical facility due to the unavailability of specialised treatment.

An argument reportedly escalated into violence, during which Mhatre and his supporters allegedly assaulted two doctors and other hospital staff inside the hospital premises. CCTV footage of the incident has surfaced, showing medical personnel being physically attacked.

    FIR registered, arrests made

Police have registered an FIR against Ramesh Mhatre and five others on charges related to assault and obstruction of public servants from discharging their duties.

Three accused have been arrested in connection with the incident, while efforts are underway to trace the remaining suspects. Mhatre has been named in the FIR but had not been arrested at the time of the latest reports.

    Doctors launch protest

The alleged assault sparked protests across KDMC-run hospitals, with doctors, nurses and paramedical staff suspending routine outpatient services to demand stricter security measures and action against those responsible.

Emergency and critical care services, however, continued to function during the protest to ensure patient care was not affected.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra government has assured that appropriate action will be taken after a thorough investigation into the incident.
