MCX prices: Silver outperforms, gold remains range-bound

Gold and silver prices in India moved higher on Thursday, supported by steady jewellery demand amid the ongoing wedding season and positive global cues.

On the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), gold was trading at ₹1,241 per gram, up 0.79 per cent, while silver surged 2.7 per cent to ₹6,821 per 10 grams as of 9:12 am. Silver outperformed gold as buying interest strengthened across spot and futures markets.

Gold’s April futures contract on MCX was marginally lower by 0.2 per cent at ₹1,56,539 per 10 grams, reflecting cautious trade at higher levels. Meanwhile, silver futures for March were largely unchanged at ₹2,52,300 per kg, after the sharp early rise.

In the international market, gold prices edged higher, trading above $5,038 per ounce. The modest gains were supported by weaker-than-expected retail sales data in the United States, which strengthened expectations of an interest rate cut by the US Federal Reserve later this year. Silver also traded slightly higher at $81.31 per ounce, tracking gains in gold.

Domestic bullion prices continue to find support from seasonal demand, as the wedding season traditionally boosts purchases of gold jewellery and silverware across major markets.

Gold prices across major cities (10 grams)

In Delhi, 24-carat gold was priced at ₹1,58,930, while 22-carat gold stood at ₹1,45,700. Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Kerala, and Hyderabad reported similar rates, with 24-carat gold at around ₹1,58,780 and 22-carat gold at ₹1,45,550. In Chennai, gold was slightly higher at ₹1,59,060 for 24-carat and ₹1,45,800 for 22-carat.

    City-wise silver prices (per kg)

Silver prices varied across cities, with Mumbai at ₹2,52,830 and Delhi at ₹2,52,390. Chennai and Hyderabad saw higher rates at ₹2,53,560 and ₹2,53,230 respectively. Prices in Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Ahmedabad were significantly higher at ₹2,89,900 per kg.

With global interest rate expectations, currency movements, and domestic demand in focus, bullion prices are likely to remain volatile in the near term, traders said.
