SC relaxes stray dog order following protests by animal lovers
Court’s interim ruling
The Supreme Court on Friday put a hold on its earlier directive regarding the release and feeding of stray dogs, sparking mixed reactions across the country.
In its ruling, the Court said sterilized and vaccinated dogs must be returned to their original neighbourhoods, while aggressive or rabid animals should be kept in isolation. It further clarified that feeding should take place only in designated zones.
Relief for some, disappointment for others
The order has divided public opinion. For animal welfare groups, the stay has come as a setback. “We had felt reassured by the earlier order—it was a fair and compassionate approach. Now, with the stay, there’s uncertainty again,” said Sonali Gaba, who runs a dog shelter.
Advocate Nanita Sharma, one of the petitioners, called the decision “disheartening for dog lovers.” She argued that the earlier judgment struck a balance between public safety and animal rights, while the stay leaves both sides in limbo.
Meanwhile, many residents, particularly in urban areas, have welcomed the pause. A resident from Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar said, “Children and elderly people are at risk when packs of dogs roam freely. The stay gives us some breathing space.”
Political responses
Delhi Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh stated that his corporation had already been following sterilization and release protocols, but the stay order highlighted the need for clearer definitions of what qualifies as an “aggressive” dog.
BJP MP and animal rights advocate Maneka Gandhi, however, expressed disappointment. She insisted that the earlier ruling was “scientific and humane” and warned that delaying implementation could worsen conditions for both people and strays.
Future of stray dog management
As the matter awaits further hearings, the divide between concerns over public safety and calls for animal welfare has deepened. The future of stray dog management in India remains uncertain, with both sides urging the Court to strike a lasting balance.
