Act of some leaders ‘shameful’: Rajya Sabha Chairman Dhankhar

Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar has expressed his unhappiness over the opposition making a mockery of him during a protest in the Parliament premises.

A Trinamool MP, Kalyan Banerjee, today mimicked Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar during an opposition protest at parliament, drawing laughter from other members as some, like Rahul Gandhi, took videos on their mobile phones.

As the TMC leader was making a mockery of the Rajya Sabha Chairman, other MPs were laughing, and Rahul Gandhi was seen taking a video on his mobile phone.

Dhankhar said that Members of Parliament are mocking the institution of the Chairman by taking him on.

Dhankhar said in the House: “I have adjourned the House. You are not aware of the kind of response that is against this institution in the mind of the people and we had the occasion to see the lowest level.”

During the discussion, senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP P Chidambaram was in the House. The Chairman said: “Mr Chidambaram is here. Mr Chidambaram, you are a very senior member. Imagine what must be going through my heart when your senior leader videographs a Member of Parliament mocking the Institution of Chairman, as an individual takes on me.”

“Don’t take on my background as a farmer, don’t take on my background as a community member. The institution of the Chairman has been ravaged and that too by a political party that has gone far so long that a Member of Parliament, a senior one, videographs the other member. For what?” he added.

The Chairman added: “I had suffered, I tell you. On Instagram, Mr Chidambram, your party put a video which was withdrawn later on. That was a shame to me. You used the official Twitter handle of the spokesperson to demean me, insult me, insult my background as a farmer, my position as a Jat, insult my position as a chairman.”

Meanwhile, some MPs were raising slogans in the Rajya Sabha and they came out from their seats. The chairman stopped them and said: “Sir, these are serious issues. Please go back to your seat.”

  1. The TAMASHA that could not be played out in the HOUSE was being played out on the entrance steps. The ageing, half literate, illiterate, with all kinds of funny accents are easy to mimic just to insult them. The frustration of the crowd on the steps of parliament could not be more obvious. All they want is Modi to stop going after their ill gotten money, not even investigate it, so sure they of the result. With the ceasures and discovery of hidden treasures the discomfort results in opposing everything but the real issue.
