Ex-DGP Sreekumar conspired to frame innocent people in Gujarat riots case, the SIT told court
Gujarat Police‘s SIT has informed the court that former Director General of Police, R B Sreekumar along with social activist Teesta Setalvad were tutoring witnesses in connection with the 2002 Godhra riots case. While opposing the bail plea of Sreekumar and Setalvad, the SIT said in its application, “The applicant (Sreekumar) was a party to the conspiracy and was also involved himself in tutoring witnesses. A witness has stated before the Nanavati Commission that I am saying what Teesta and Sreekumar told us to say.”
Former director general of police (DGP) R B Sreekumar was a “disgruntled” officer who became a part of a “larger conspiracy” to frame innocent persons in the 2002 Gujarat communal riots cases, the SIT told the Ahmedabad court.
“Sreekumar had started to act as a part of the conspiracy from the very beginning just a few days after the Godhra train burning incident, which took place on February 27, 2002. He had held a meeting with co-accused Setalvad,” the affidavit stated.
“This larger conspiracy was hatched by the accused – including Sreekumar, Setalvad, and Bhatt – with ‘political motives’ ‘…on behest of Late Ahmed Patel, the then MP and political advisor to the president of the Indian National Congress,” the SIT claimed.
“Sreekumar was also involved in tutoring and pressuring witnesses,” the SIT document said, citing the statement of witnesses which it said further reveals the “political nature of the conspiracy”.
The larger conspiracy in connection with the 2002 Godhra riots was hatched on the behest of Congress Rajya Sabha member and the party’s National President Sonia Gandhi‘s political advisor Ahmed Patel. Both Teesta and Sreekumar had met Patel.
