Crane collapse derails train in Thailand, at least 22 killed

At least 22 people were killed after a construction crane collapsed onto a moving passenger train in Thailand on Wednesday morning, derailing the train and triggering a brief fire, according to local police cited by AFP.

The accident occurred around 9:05 am in Sikhio district of Nakhon Ratchasima province, about 230 km northeast of Bangkok, when the train travelling from the capital to Ubon Ratchathani was struck by a crane being used for a high-speed rail bridge project. The impact caused several coaches to derail and catch fire, Reuters reported, quoting police officials.

Rescue teams rushed to the site as multiple passengers were trapped inside damaged carriages. Thailand’s government Public Relations Department said more than 30 people were injured, while emergency crews worked to extinguish the fire and evacuate survivors. Although some initial reports cited a lower death toll, provincial police chief Thatchapon Chinnawong confirmed that at least 22 fatalities had been recorded.
