The car rammed into a goods lorry parked on NH-66 at Panambikkunnu in Kaipamangalam
A late-night journey through Kerala’s Thrissur district ended in tragedy after a car carrying eight people believed to be engineering students from Tamil Nadu crashed into the rear of a parked goods lorry on NH-66.
The accident took place around 11:40 pm on Friday at Panambikkunnu in Kaipamangalam, while the group was reportedly travelling from Guruvayur towards Kodungallur. Police said all eight occupants died in the crash.
Car crushed under lorry
The collision was so severe that the car was left badly mangled, trapping some of those inside. Police, firefighters and local residents rushed to the spot, with rescue workers having to cut open parts of the vehicle to retrieve the occupants.
The bodies were subsequently shifted to the mortuary at Thrissur Medical College for post-mortem examinations.
Victims believed to be engineering students
The deceased are believed to have been students from neighbouring Tamil Nadu. An identity card reportedly linked to PSNA College of Engineering and Technology in Dindigul was recovered from the crash site, although authorities were still working to formally confirm the identities.
Crash occurred on highway under roadwork
The accident happened on a stretch of NH-66 where roadwork was reportedly underway. Police are investigating the circumstances that led the car to collide with the stationary lorry, including the condition of the road and other possible contributing factors.
The tragedy has once again put the spotlight on road safety on highway stretches undergoing construction or repair, particularly during late-night travel.
