Fresh violence erupts a day after attack on Abhishek Banerjee as TMC-BJP confrontation intensifies

Political tensions in West Bengal escalated further on Saturday after Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee was allegedly injured during a violent clash between TMC and BJP supporters outside the Chanditala Police Station in Hooghly district.

The confrontation erupted during a TMC protest against the arrest of several party leaders and workers. According to reports, a delegation of TMC leaders had arrived at the police station to submit a memorandum demanding the release of party workers. However, the situation quickly spiralled out of control before the delegation could enter the premises.

Eyewitnesses claimed that BJP supporters gathered near the police station and raised slogans targeting TMC leaders. The exchange of slogans soon turned into a heated confrontation, leading to scuffles between rival political workers.

Amid the chaos, TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee allegedly sustained injuries and reportedly suffered a head injury. He was immediately provided medical assistance as police personnel rushed to contain the situation and prevent further escalation.

The latest incident comes barely a day after another high-profile attack involving senior TMC leader and MP Abhishek Banerjee. The Diamond Harbour MP was allegedly assaulted during his visit to Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas, where he had gone to meet families affected by post-poll violence.

According to reports, Abhishek Banerjee was surrounded by an angry crowd during the visit. Stones and eggs were allegedly hurled at him, while some individuals reportedly attempted to physically assault him. Videos circulating on social media showed chaotic scenes, with people shouting slogans and accusing the TMC leadership of corruption and political violence.

The TMC has alleged that BJP workers are targeting its leaders and supporters in areas where post-poll tensions remain high. The BJP, on the other hand, has claimed that public anger against the ruling party is driving these confrontations and has denied involvement in any organised attacks.

With political temperatures continuing to rise across the state, security agencies are expected to increase deployment in sensitive districts to prevent further clashes between rival party workers.
