NDA sweeps Tripura Council polls; voters reject Congress and CPI(M)
Even as Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Vadra, along with their court jesters, were staging a mammoth drama in the national capital on Tuesday demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar — in spite of Monday’s Supreme Court order that the CEC can never be suspended on the basis of a newspaper report — an interesting development has taken place in Tripura.
Another big-time demand by the Congress and its allies is that all elections should be held with ballot papers, discarding the Electronic Voting Machines. The Congress and its long-time ally the CPI(M) were in for a shock. The election held for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council threw up a result that looks like a slap in the face of the Congress leaders. The polling was held using paper ballots as demanded by the INDIA Alliance.
The NDA, led by the BJP, walked away with 4,320 out of the 4,594 seats. This means that the NDA bagged 94 percent of the TTAADC seats while the CPI(M), which ruled the state for almost 25 years, had to content itself with just 87 seats. The Congress, which staged a nationwide agitation demanding polling with paper ballots, finished a poor third by winning just 14 seats.
The elections to 587 Village Committees under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) were held on 28 September, with counting on 5 October and final results declared on Tuesday.
Of the 4,597 notified seats, 1,644 were decided uncontested, and three remained without nominations, leaving 4,594 seats for which results were declared.
Once the results were announced, the CPI(M) started blaming the BJP leadership and the Election Commission for not allowing the party cadres anywhere near the counting stations. In addition to this, the comrades and the Congress alleged large-scale booth capturing by BJP leaders. The question being asked is whether the Congress would change its demand from ballot papers to election by draw of lots.
