Trump reacts strongly to Indian-origin Socialist’s Democratic primary victory
US President Donald Trump criticized Indian-origin leftist Zohran Mamdani following his win in the Democratic primary for New York City’s mayoral race. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump called Mamdani a “100% Communist Lunatic” and warned that the Democratic Party has gone too far to the left.
Attack targets Mamdani and his progressive allies
Trump’s post expressed concern about the Democratic Party’s direction, saying, “It’s finally happened, the Democrats have crossed the line.” He described Mamdani as someone who “looks terrible,” with a “grating voice,” and claimed he is not intelligent. Trump also criticized Mamdani’s political allies, including Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, whom he grouped with others as “AOC+3,” and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, sarcastically calling him “our Great Palestinian Senator.”
In a follow-up post, Trump suggested Democrats nominate “Low IQ Candidate, Jasmine Crockett, for President” and appoint members of “AOC+3” to Cabinet roles, comments widely interpreted as mocking the progressive faction.
Zohran Mamdani: Background and political platform
Zohran Mamdani, 33, is a Muslim of Indian origin and the son of renowned filmmaker Mira Nair and Ugandan-born scholar Mahmood Mamdani. Currently serving as a New York State Assemblyman from Queens, Mamdani secured 43.5% of the vote in the Democratic primary, with 90% of ballots counted, after former Governor Andrew Cuomo conceded.
Mamdani would become New York City’s first Muslim mayor if he wins the general election.
The Democratic Socialists of America endorse him and have attracted both attention and criticism for his outspoken support of Palestinians and his accusation that Israel has committed “genocide.” His high-profile supporters include Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
