The controversy erupted after comments made during a Cauvery protest rally, prompting demands for legal action and a public apology
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, has approached the National Commission for Women (NCW) seeking action against Tamil Nadu Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin over remarks directed at actor Trisha during a public rally.
Describing the comments as “deeply troubling and offensive“, the party urged the women’s rights body to intervene, alleging that the remarks were vulgar, objectifying and unbecoming of a public representative. TVK has also announced plans to stage protests across Tamil Nadu over the controversy.
Remarks at Cauvery protest trigger backlash
The controversy stems from a protest meeting held in Thanjavur over the Cauvery water-sharing issue, where Udhayanidhi Stalin criticised the state government over the water dispute.
During his address, members of the audience reportedly shouted Trisha’s name. Udhayanidhi responded with what TVK described as an offensive double entendre, triggering immediate criticism from political opponents.
TVK seeks NCW intervention
In its complaint, TVK alleged that the remarks normalised the objectification and verbal harassment of women from a public platform.
The party argued that such language violated the standards of decorum expected from elected representatives and urged the NCW to take suo motu cognisance of the incident.
TVK has also demanded that Udhayanidhi issue an unconditional public apology and sought the registration of a police case, alleging that his remarks amounted to outraging the modesty of a woman.
BJP also criticises remarks
The controversy quickly snowballed into a political flashpoint, with both TVK and the BJP condemning the comments.
TVK MLA Rhevanth Charan described the remarks as “absolutely disgusting” and said they reflected the declining standards of political discourse.
Tamil Nadu BJP chief spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy also launched a sharp attack on Udhayanidhi, calling the remarks vulgar and shameful. He demanded strict legal action, alleging that such language had no place in public life.
Trisha has faced similar remarks before
The latest controversy is not the first time actor Trisha has found herself at the centre of political commentary. In recent years, rumours linking her with Vijay have repeatedly prompted comments from political leaders and members of the film industry.
Earlier this year, BJP leader Nainar Nagendran made remarks referring to the actor while commenting on Vijay’s political journey, following which Trisha’s legal team issued a response.
The latest episode has once again reignited debate over the language used by public figures and the treatment of women in political discourse.
