Violence strikes again in J&K
A group of unidentified terrorists Thursday shot dead two members of the Village Defence Group (VDG) in the Kuntwara forest area of communally sensitive Kishtwar district.
This is the ninth incident of terrorist violence since October 16, the day Omar Abdullah took the oath of office in Srinagar.
According to police, the slain VDG members have been identified as Nazir Ahmed S/O Mohd Khalil and Kuldeep Kumar S/O Amar Chand both residents of Ohli Kuntwara.
Unconfirmed reports claimed both the VDG members were kidnapped during the day and their dead bodies, with marks of bullet injuries, were found in a pool of blood by the local villagers in the remote area.
The VDG members are deployed for routine patrolling and general vigil duties in aid of the local police authorities. They have been armed with weapons to counter any threat from the terrorist outfits and most of the time act as first responders after detecting any suspicious movement of terrorists in the higher reaches. Earlier they were armed with .303 rifles and now some of the VDG members have been provided with SLR rifles by the security forces.
A terrorist outfit Kashmir Tigers has claimed responsibility for the attack. Kashmir Tigers have also released images of the dead bodies with their hands tied. So far the police have not recovered the dead bodies nor issued any official statement linked with the circumstances under which the VDG members were targeted.
