MEA says remarks do not reflect India-US relations
India on Thursday strongly criticised remarks made in a social media post amplified by US President Donald Trump, calling them “uninformed, inappropriate and in poor taste.”
The response came after Trump shared a controversial post by radio host Michael Savage that described India and other countries in derogatory terms.
Without naming Trump directly, the Ministry of External Affairs said the comments did not reflect the reality of ties between the two countries.
MEA stresses strength of India-US ties
“We have seen the comments… The remarks are obviously uninformed, inappropriate and in poor taste,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.
He added that such views “certainly do not reflect the reality of the India-US relationship,” which is built on mutual respect and shared interests.
US embassy issues clarification
Amid the backlash, the US embassy released a statement saying Trump considers India a “great country” led by a “good friend.”
The clarification followed queries from Indian media after the post triggered widespread criticism.
Backlash from community groups
The Hindu American Foundation condemned the remarks, calling them “hateful” and warning they could fuel racism and xenophobia.
“We are deeply disturbed… endorsing such rants will further stoke hatred and endanger our communities,” the group said, urging Trump to reconsider and delete the post.
Political reactions emerge
Reacting to the controversy, Priyanka Chaturvedi said she had come across the remarks while travelling to an event, describing them as “very scathing.”
The episode has sparked a diplomatic row, even as both sides sought to underline the broader strength of India-US relations.
