US defends Venezuela operation, Trump signals readiness for more action
US President Donald Trump late Sunday issued another warning to Venezuela, stating that the United States would carry out further military strikes “if they don’t behave.” Defending the recent US military action under Operation Absolute Resolve, Trump invoked the Monroe Doctrine and justified the strikes that led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.
The US operation resulted in the detention of Maduro and Flores on Saturday, hours after a dramatic military action unfolded in Caracas. Both were taken into US custody following the strikes.
Speaking about the operation, Trump said the action was aimed at maintaining peace and reaffirming US influence in the Western Hemisphere. “It’s about peace on Earth. We’ve got to have peace. It’s our hemisphere. The Monroe Doctrine was very important when it was done, and other Presidents lost sight of it. I didn’t,” he said.
Trump acknowledged that the operation carried significant risks, describing it as “very dangerous.” He said several US personnel were injured but were in stable condition. He also confirmed that one helicopter was heavily damaged during the operation, though no fatalities were reported. “We got everything back, and nobody was killed,” he said, adding that the United States remained firmly in control of the situation.
Maduro and Flores are currently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn and are expected to face trial in the United States. Federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York have charged the pair with conspiracy to commit narco-terrorism, cocaine importation, possession of machine guns and destructive devices, and conspiracy to possess such weapons.
Maduro has consistently denied allegations of involvement in drug trafficking and cartel operations. He has accused the United States of using the “war on drugs” as a pretext to target Venezuela and gain access to its vast oil reserves. According to the US Energy Information Administration, Venezuela holds an estimated 303 billion barrels of proven oil reserves, accounting for nearly one-fifth of the global total.
