Marco Rubio conveyed President Donald Trump’s invitation for PM Modi to visit Washington

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Saturday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi and conveyed an invitation from President Donald Trump for the Prime Minister to visit the White House in the near future. The two leaders held discussions on strengthening India-US cooperation in key areas including security, trade, critical technologies, and regional stability in the Indo-Pacific.

Following the meeting, Prime Minister Modi shared details of the interaction on X, saying the talks focused on the continued progress of the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership as well as issues concerning regional and global peace and security.

“Happy to receive the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio. We discussed sustained progress in the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and issues related to regional and global peace and security. India and the United States will continue to work closely for the global good,” PM Modi wrote.

Rubio arrived in India earlier on Saturday as part of a four-day visit that includes stops in Kolkata, New Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur. He is accompanied by his wife Jeanette D. Rubio and US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor.

The US Secretary of State began his India visit in Kolkata, where he visited the Mother House, headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity founded by Mother Teresa. He interacted with members of the organisation and paid tribute to its humanitarian work. Rubio became the first US Secretary of State to visit Kolkata since Hillary Clinton’s trip in 2012.

After arriving in New Delhi, Rubio attended official engagements at the US Embassy and held talks with Prime Minister Modi. He is also scheduled to meet External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar ahead of the Quad foreign ministers’ meeting set to take place in the national capital on Tuesday.

The discussions between India and the United States are expected to focus heavily on trade, defence cooperation, energy security, critical technologies, and the evolving geopolitical situation in West Asia. Before departing for India, Rubio had underlined the importance of deeper cooperation with New Delhi amid growing global energy concerns linked to tensions in the Middle East and disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz.

The visit comes at a time when both countries are looking to further strengthen their strategic partnership and coordination within the Quad framework alongside Japan and Australia.
