CENTCOM says strikes were carried out in self-defence amid fragile Iran-US negotiations
The United States has confirmed carrying out a fresh round of military strikes against Iranian military infrastructure, targeting radar installations and drone command centres on Goruk and Qeshm Islands over the weekend. The operation comes amid rising tensions in the Gulf region despite ongoing diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran to preserve a fragile ceasefire and negotiate broader security arrangements.
According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the strikes were launched in response to the downing of an American MQ-1 Predator drone that was operating over international waters. The US military described the action as a defensive response to what it termed aggressive Iranian behaviour.
In a statement posted on social media, CENTCOM said American fighter aircraft targeted and destroyed Iranian air defence systems, a drone command-and-control facility, and two one-way attack drones that were allegedly preparing for operations in the region.
The Pentagon maintained that the strikes were conducted to protect US personnel and assets operating in and around the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. Officials said no American service members were injured during the operation.
The latest military action follows a series of tit-for-tat confrontations between the two countries over the past week. Earlier, Iran reportedly launched attacks targeting a US military facility after Washington conducted strikes against what it described as Iranian drone-related infrastructure near the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian state-affiliated media offered a different account of the developments. According to reports citing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Iranian forces launched retaliatory strikes against an airbase allegedly linked to an American attack on a communications tower located on Sirik Island in southern Hormozgan province.
The IRGC claimed its aerospace forces successfully targeted and destroyed facilities associated with the operation. However, Iranian authorities did not provide specific details regarding the location of the airbase involved.
Meanwhile, Kuwait reported that its air defence systems were activated early Monday after detecting incoming drone and missile threats. Kuwaiti authorities said interception measures were undertaken to safeguard national security.
No organisation immediately claimed responsibility for the attempted attack. However, regional analysts believe the operation may have involved Iranian-backed militia groups or Iranian military elements, given the ongoing confrontation between Washington and Tehran.
The latest exchange underscores the continuing volatility in the Gulf region, where military tensions persist despite diplomatic negotiations aimed at securing a long-term agreement on Iran’s nuclear programme, maritime security and the reopening of key international shipping routes.
