Why Liberals Should Support Hindutva

Religious diversity is as important as eco-diversity

Why Liberals Should Support Hindutva
Why Liberals Should Support Hindutva

If liberals don’t try to protect Hindutva and Hinduism from attack by Islam and Christianity, they will be recognized for what they otherwise are, viz, pseudo-seculars, and ignored by the people.

Though the title of this article may appear outrageous, I want liberals to read it dispassionately.

As rightly claimed by liberals, a majority of Hindus (more accurately ‘Sanatana Dharmics’, but let’s stick to ‘Hindus’, the more commonly used term) are secular; not communal.

In recent years, a majority of Indian Hindus are voting for BJP, which liberals consider a communal party.

Hindus who vote for BJP may not necessarily support it for religious reasons, but a large % of the Hindus do; why else would Rahul Gandhi be visiting temples, proclaiming his gothra, esp in public view?

Majority of the average (or liberal) Christian or Muslim are not a party to any such plan. They remain silent about it partly because they are too powerless to oppose it.

Though the recent state election results are a moderate setback for BJP, too much should not be read in these results. Most of the very same states may vote substantially for Modi in the Lok Sabha elections, though not as firmly as they did in 2014.

The very fact that the opposition parties realize it is necessary for them to have pre-poll and post-poll alliances to defeat BJP shows that they understand the mass appeal Modi enjoys, despite being perceived as not having delivered on his promises substantially.

Why would a majority of intrinsically secular Hindus vote in such large numbers for BJP, as opinion polls seem to suggest? Liberals should think.

Hindus are increasingly coming to believe that there’s a concerted effort by Muslim religious leaders to convert India into a Muslim majority country, and by Christian religious leaders into a Christian majority country. And most Hindus believe that the opposition parties, esp the Congress, are tacitly supporting these Muslim and Christian religious heads.

Liberals may believe it is BJP and RSS which try to seed such thoughts, but such a strong fear residing the minds of Hindus cannot be dismissed.

First of all, both Christianity and Islam are exclusively monotheistic religions; that is, they both believe there is only one God, and that is their respective Gods. Their global religious leadership has always attempted to convert the rest of the world to their belief system and substantially succeeded. Hindus are increasingly becoming aware of this.

Majority of the average (or liberal) Christian or Muslim are not a party to any such plan. They remain silent about it partly because they are too powerless to oppose it, and partly because if their leaders were to succeed, it would only provide them with an additional feeling of security. No wonder mass conversion has been happening the world over, using all means, fair and foul, over centuries.

Regardless of how Hindus react to mass conversions by religious leaders of Christianity and Islam, this act should be strongly unacceptable to genuine liberals. Let’s see why.

Every effort should be made by everyone, especially the liberals, even Muslims and Christians, to preserve religious diversity in the world.

It is in the long-term interest of the world and human civilization to preserve the religious diversity of the world, especially Hinduism that has a long history with corresponding culture and heritage. Sure enough, there are fault lines within Hinduism, like in all religions, but they can be corrected. Hinduism remains the most important religion that has survived extinction despite centuries of attempts by Christianity and Islam.

Also, how does mass conversion serve the cause of Islam or Christianity, much less the cause of an average Muslim or Christian? If one were to think about it dispassionately, one would realize the pointlessness of such conversions, except for pandering to the sense of domination and money power of the top religious leaders.

Converting everyone in the world to just one or two (or a few) religions is similar to the lion and the tiger killing all other animals in the forest, including every mighty elephant, leaving the forest with just lions and tigers.

(The analogy is very apt because the lion and tiger kill other animals for their livelihood, while the elephant doesn’t. Just as Christianity and Islam seek to kill other religions by mass conversions, while Hinduism doesn’t.)

This is also analogous to reducing most of the plant, fish and bacteria and every other living species into one or two in each species. This is dangerous, as scientists and even liberals would know.

So, every effort should be made by everyone, especially the liberals, even Muslims and Christians, to preserve religious diversity in the world. India is the only large Hindu majority country. It won’t ever try to devour the other religions. Whereas, if India were to become a Christian or Muslim majority country, chances are very high that Hinduism will be almost wiped out over time, as it has happened with other faiths across the world, over centuries.

Once the average Hindu realizes that India will remain a Hindu majority country, Hindutva as part of political discourse will come down substantially, and bijli-sadak-paani kind of economic issues will come to the forefront in elections.

The issue is not whether Hinduism will be wiped out (very likely not), but the fear among Hindus is such a possibility. This fear creates large-scale tensions in society. In such a scenario, by the law of averages, some among the Hindus are taking the law into their hands leading to the kind of inter-religious tensions we see all around which cannot be avoided.

The more the liberals oppose the Hindus who try to protect their religion in the tensions, the more will be the fear among the Hindus and the inter-religious problems will only get worse.

Let’s imagine that liberals start defending Hindutva (Hindu way of living) and Hindu religion from attack by other religions, even if they don’t believe in Hinduism. Just as they claim to defend others’ right to freedom of speech regardless of whether they agree with their views or not.

The definition of Hindutva and Hinduism that they protect need not even be the same which is in ascendance with political support from BJP, Shiv Sena etc today, as long as it is acceptable to the majority Hindus.

Once the average Hindu realizes that India will remain a Hindu majority country, Hindutva as part of political discourse will come down substantially, and bijli-sadak-paani kind of economic issues will come to the forefront in elections; and there will be inter-religious peace across India.

If liberals don’t try to protect Hindutva and Hinduism from attack by Islam and Christianity, they will be recognized for what they otherwise are, viz, pseudo-seculars, and ignored by the people.

  1. Most of the Liberals are either closeted Muslims or Christians with Hindu names. In most cases if one checks their family backgrounds and ancestry it can be clearly seen that the families Dharmic Traditions in the family have long disintegrated or has disintegrated recently and their ancestral loyalties have shifted to the British (west) or to the Moguls or to the Christians. Please note that the British left a lot of prime property in many parts of India to converted loyal Indian christian families and they still have the same loyalties to that faith and to Britian or to the West. Nation rebuilding is an exercise over centuries

  2. They are not enlightened or liberals, they are materialists/marxists and they hate Hinduism as much as the Christians or the Muslims do. Hence they would rather live in a Muslim world or a Christian world than a multi-divinity Hindu worldl
