The temporary review process has affected users in India and other countries, with some accounts restored within minutes
Several WhatsApp users in India and other countries have reported that their accounts were suddenly placed “under review” and temporarily restricted for up to 24 hours, leaving them unable to access key features of the messaging platform. The move has sparked confusion, with many users taking to social media to question why their accounts were flagged.
According to users, WhatsApp displayed a message informing them that their accounts were under review and that access to messaging features would remain limited while the platform completed its verification process. Some users reported that the restriction lasted the full 24-hour period, while others said their accounts were restored within minutes.
What does ‘account under review’ mean?
The temporary restriction appears to be part of WhatsApp’s automated safety and integrity checks designed to detect suspicious or unusual account activity. Although the company has not disclosed why a large number of accounts were reviewed simultaneously, such reviews are generally aimed at protecting the platform against spam, fraud, impersonation and other forms of misuse.
During the review period, affected users may be unable to send or receive messages or use other WhatsApp features until the verification process is completed.
No indication of a permanent ban
Unlike a permanent account ban, an “under review” status does not necessarily mean that a user has violated WhatsApp’s policies. The review is intended to determine whether the account’s activity complies with the platform’s Terms of Service.
If WhatsApp concludes that the account has not breached its rules, access is restored automatically. Users who believe their account has been incorrectly flagged can also request a review through the app if necessary.
Users advised to avoid policy violations
WhatsApp has repeatedly warned users against activities that can trigger enforcement measures, including sending bulk or spam messages, using unofficial or modified versions of the app, engaging in fraudulent activity or violating the platform’s Terms of Service.
For now, the company has not explained what triggered the latest wave of account reviews or how many users were affected, but the temporary restrictions have generated widespread discussion online.
