Centre raises concerns over impersonation and online fraud as Meta asked to explain privacy safeguards behind WhatsApp’s upcoming username system
The Centre has issued a notice to Meta seeking a detailed explanation of WhatsApp‘s upcoming username feature, directing the company to respond within three days amid concerns over its potential misuse, sources said.
According to sources cited by PTI, the government has sought clarity on how the feature will function, the safeguards built into the system, and the measures Meta plans to adopt to prevent impersonation, fraud and abuse.
The proposed update will allow WhatsApp users to communicate using unique usernames instead of sharing their mobile phone numbers, a move aimed at strengthening user privacy.
Government flags misuse concerns
While the feature is designed to offer greater privacy, officials are examining whether it could inadvertently enable fake identities, impersonation and the spread of misleading or harmful content.
Authorities are particularly concerned that anonymous usernames could make it easier for fraudsters to deceive users while making it more difficult to verify identities.
The government is currently reviewing the feature’s overall impact on user safety and digital security before its wider rollout.
What is the new WhatsApp username feature?
WhatsApp is developing a system that will allow users to connect with others through unique usernames rather than revealing their phone numbers.
The feature is expected to enhance privacy, particularly in group chats and conversations with new contacts, by giving users greater control over their personal information.
Meta has already begun allowing some users to reserve their preferred usernames ahead of the public rollout, which is expected in the coming months.
Meta also plans to allow eligible users to align their WhatsApp username with their existing Instagram or Facebook handles, enabling a consistent digital identity across platforms.
No public username directory
WhatsApp has clarified that it will not introduce a searchable public directory of usernames.
Instead, users will need to know the exact username to initiate a conversation. The platform is also planning an optional username key security feature, allowing users to control who can contact them using their username.
The government’s review of the feature comes as authorities continue to scrutinise new digital privacy tools and online safety mechanisms introduced by major technology platforms.
