Putin’s first US visit in a decade
US President Donald Trump will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday, August 15, 2025, to discuss a possible end to the ongoing Russia–Ukraine war.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “The highly anticipated meeting between myself, as President of the United States of America, and President Vladimir Putin of Russia will take place next Friday, August 15, 2025, in the Great State of Alaska. Further details to follow.”

This will be Putin’s first visit to the United States in a decade. His last trip was in September 2015, when he met then-President Barack Obama during the UN General Assembly in New York.
Background and build-up to the meeting
The announcement came shortly after Trump told reporters he believed “we have a shot” at brokering a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine. He suggested the agreement could involve an exchange of territories “to the betterment of both.”
Earlier this week, Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov confirmed the meeting, following US envoy Steve Witkoff’s visit to Moscow. Witkoff had proposed a trilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, but Russia gave no response to that idea.
Trump has made repeated efforts to mediate an end to the war, but three rounds of direct talks between Moscow and Kyiv since 2022 have failed to make progress. The conflict, now in its fourth year, has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced millions.
Ukraine’s position
In his Friday evening address, Zelenskyy said a ceasefire was possible if sufficient pressure was maintained on Russia. He confirmed ongoing communication with the United States and multiple discussions with foreign leaders.
Symbolism of Alaska
This will be Trump’s first face-to-face meeting with Putin since returning to the presidency. Alaska’s geographic position between the United States and Russia underscores the symbolic significance of the location.
International reactions and parallel diplomacy
Putin recently spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping, who expressed support for a long-term resolution to the conflict. The Russian leader also contacted Prime Minister Narendra Modi and leaders from South Africa, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Belarus.
The outreach comes amid strained relations between the US and several countries over their ties with Russia. Just days before the meeting was confirmed, Trump imposed a 50% tariff on Indian goods, citing New Delhi’s continued imports of Russian oil.
Putin is also scheduled to visit China next month, while Washington continues to accuse Beijing, North Korea, and Iran of supporting Russia’s war effort.
