BJP criticizes Mamata Banerjee, accuses TMC of failing to protect women

The gangrape of a second-year student of a private medical college in Durgapur has sparked widespread outrage in West Bengal, with political parties trading accusations over law and order and women’s safety in the state.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) targeted the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, criticizing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for what they described as insensitive remarks suggesting that girls “should not be allowed to go outside at night.” The BJP accused the state government of failing to protect women, while the TMC claimed the opposition was politicizing the tragic incident.

“She was studying in a private medical college… all the private medical colleges—whose responsibility are they? How did she come out at 12:30 at night? From what I know, it happened in a forest area… investigation is ongoing,” Mamata Banerjee said on Sunday.

BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia condemned Banerjee’s comments, calling her a “blot on womanhood.” On X, he wrote, “Shameless @MamataOfficial a blot on womanhood, even more for being a CM… After RG Kar and Sandeshkhali, now this horrific case of rape, and instead of justice, she blames the victim.”

Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar also criticized the Chief Minister, questioning whether Banerjee expected women to remain indoors. “Earlier, after the RG Kar Medical College incident, private companies were advised to give fewer night shifts to women. Now the Chief Minister is saying women should not go out at night. Does she want all women to wear burqas and stay at home?” he asked.

Archana Majumdar, member of the National Commission for Women (NCW), described Banerjee’s remarks as “absurd.” She said, “How can we say that for 12 hours a day a girl should stay locked in a room? Women work in hospitals, IT, and many sectors equally to men. Today’s Indian girls are winning gold medals at the Olympics, going to space, and we say girls should stay inside after 8 or 9 pm? This is not correct.”

BJP West Bengal Secretary Priyanka Tibrewal accused Banerjee of victim shaming. “Once again, an insensitive comment comes from the Chief Minister, where instead of holding the perpetrators accountable, she shifts the blame onto the girl for leaving her hostel,” she said.

BJP MP Shankar Lalwani condemned the incident, highlighting the lack of law and order in the state. “This incident is very shameful, and similar crimes have occurred before. There is no law and order in the state. I strongly condemn this,” he told ANI.

Following widespread backlash, Mamata Banerjee clarified that her remarks had been misrepresented. “The media distorted my words. You ask me a question, I answer it, and then you distort it. Do not try this kind of politics,” she said in Alipurduar.

Meanwhile, three accused individuals have been arrested and presented before the court, as the investigation continues.
