US President Donald Trump on Sunday once again seemed to take credit for problems far beyond his reach, calling Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir “great people” and vowing to “quickly” resolve the Pakistan-Afghanistan conflict—while speaking from thousands of miles away at the ASEAN summit in Kuala Lumpur.

Trump made the remarks during the signing of the Thailand-Cambodia peace deal, reminding the world that, in his own words, he has ended “eight wars in eight months” — a record apparently unmatched by any other US president in history. “We’re averaging one a month. There is only one left, although I heard that Pakistan and Afghanistan have started up. But I’ll get that solved very quickly. I know them both,” he claimed.

From an Indian perspective, the statement was met with raised eyebrows and suppressed laughter. Analysts noted that while Trump is happy to tout his conflict-resolution skills, the US has historically struggled with complex South Asian disputes—making his “I’ll do it nicely” assurances sound more like an overconfident reality show pitch than serious diplomacy.

Trump also insisted, “I don’t need to do it, I guess. But if I can take time and save millions of lives, that’s really a great thing. I can’t think of anything better to do.” In India, observers couldn’t help but wonder whether the US president was signing peace deals or auditioning for a superhero role.

Earlier this year, Trump had also claimed to have prevented escalation between India and Pakistan, recalling Pakistani PM Shehbaz Sharif’s reported remark that he had “saved millions of lives.” Critics in India have pointed out that much of the South Asia peacekeeping game is complicated, and any quick fixes are rarely that simple.
