Intelligence leak and media haste blamed for Red Fort car-bomb attack

Terror attack near Delhi’s Red Fort on Monday, November 10 evening, is a clear goof-up by India’s Police/ Intelligence agencies, by giving premature information to the media on Friday, November 7, about the arrest of four doctors. This led to the suicide attack by the fifth doctor on November 10, after hearing the arrest of his four partners on Friday, November 7.

On Friday, November 7, Jammu and Kashmir Police informed the media about the arrest of a terror module of four doctors who were planning to carry out terror strikes and their presence in Faridabad in Haryana and Sharanpur in Uttar Pradesh. Citing Police inputs, all Indian media, started first by India Today and Hindustan Times from November 7, gave details of the terror module of doctors.

Not only did the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Haryana’s Faridabad Police, also gave details about the terror module of doctors and their intentions, and their style of collecting ammunition, and their plans. Actually Police should not have briefed the media like this before getting all the details and arresting other hiding persons.

Hardly, 2-3 days are not enough to interrogate these hardcore people. But the Police went to town, and by Monday, November 10, all Indian media were covering the new terror module of doctors linked to Pakistan-based terror outfits. By evening, November 10, the fifth doctor, Umar Mohammed (36), in the terror module, conducted a suicide car bomb blast in the Red Fort in Delhi. He was working at Al Falah Medical College in Faridabad. How this Kashmir guy (working 800 kilometers from home hometown) went uncaught in the radar of the Intelligence and local police is another question.

Faridabad Police, like Jammu and Kashmir Police, was also competing in a media briefing about the arrest of a terror module of doctors, caught from Srinagar, Faridabad, and Sharanpur in Uttar Pradesh. All these media briefings were literally a goof-up or premature, leading to the escape of the fifth doctor, who went on a suicide car bomb attack on Monday.

The worst was for the past 24 hours – the Indian media was flashing news that a lady doctor was also involved in this terror module. Fortunately, on Tuesday morning, November 11, Lady Doctor Shaheen Shahid was arrested in Lucknow. Why are Police and Intelligence agencies giving premature details to the media before concluding the operations?

The question is, when will the Indian Police do their work properly and act professionally? Credit claiming and chest thumping of victory in operation without finishing the operation resulted in tragedy – a terror attack by the Doctors’ Gang, who got information about the arrest of their partners. India’s top Police and Intelligence Chiefs must sit together and prevent such tragedies in the future by deriving proper Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

India’s Home Minister Amit Shah also should find more time to devote to national security affairs, though he is always very busy with politicking and concentrating on his other Ministry – Co-Operation.
