India proposes key global initiatives on skills, health and security
Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled four major initiatives aimed at driving inclusive global development at the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg. The proposals include a Global Traditional Knowledge Repository, Africa Skills Multiplier Initiative, Global Healthcare Response Team, and a G20 Initiative on Countering the Drug-Terror Nexus.
Speaking at the first session on inclusive and sustainable growth, PM Modi said the initiatives reflect India’s civilisational ethos and are designed to address pressing global challenges through shared expertise and collaboration.
Global Traditional Knowledge Repository
PM Modi said the proposed knowledge repository will document “time-tested traditional wisdom” from various cultures, especially India’s long heritage of sustainable living practices.
“India has a rich history in this regard. This initiative will help pass on our collective wisdom for better health, sustainability and wellbeing,” he told world leaders.
Africa Skills Multiplier Initiative
Underscoring that Africa’s progress is essential for global prosperity, PM Modi announced an ambitious skill-development plan for the continent.
“Our collective goal is to train one million certified trainers in Africa over the next decade,” he said.
The ‘train-the-trainers’ model will enable these certified trainers to further equip millions of African youth with employable skills, creating a long-term developmental multiplier.
Global Healthcare Response Team
Calling for stronger global health cooperation, PM Modi proposed the formation of a G20 healthcare response team equipped to handle emergencies and natural disasters.
“We are stronger when we work together in the face of health emergencies. Teams of trained medical experts should be created for rapid deployment during crises,” the Prime Minister said.
Initiative on Countering the Drug-Terror Nexus
The Prime Minister also urged world leaders to collectively combat the growing linkage between drug trafficking and terrorism.
“Under this initiative, we can bring together instruments related to finance, governance and security. Only then can we weaken the drug-terror economy,” he stressed, noting the global spread of dangerous substances like fentanyl.
PM Modi is on a three-day visit to South Africa, where India is underscoring its commitment to global partnerships, sustainable growth and South-South cooperation.
