
54 years of Vijay Diwas: Nation honours Armed Forces’ legacy
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday extended greetings on the occasion of the 54th Vijay Diwas, paying tribute to the courage and sacrifice of India’s Armed Forces that led to the historic victory in the 1971 India-Pakistan war and the liberation of Bangladesh.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister remembered the valour and unwavering resolve of Indian soldiers who fought against overwhelming odds to secure a decisive victory.
“On Vijay Diwas, we remember the brave soldiers whose courage and sacrifice ensured India had a historic victory in 1971. Their steadfast resolve and selfless service protected our nation and etched a moment of pride in our history. Their heroism continues to inspire generations of Indians,” PM Modi wrote.

President Droupadi Murmu also paid her respects to the Armed Forces, recalling their devotion, courage and patriotism. She highlighted the Army’s role in Operation Sindoor, India’s retaliatory strike against Pakistan following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives.
“On the occasion of Vijay Diwas, I pay my humble respects to the brave sons of Mother India. Their courage, valour and unparalleled devotion to the motherland fill the nation with pride,” the President said, adding that Operation Sindoor reflected India’s self-reliance, strategic resolve and modern warfare capabilities.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force operated in flawless coordination in 1971, defeating the Pakistani Army and reshaping South Asia’s history.
“The decisive victory of 1971 asserted India’s strategic resolve and global standing. Their valour and discipline continue to inspire generations,” he wrote.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also saluted the Armed Forces, stating that the indomitable bravery of Indian soldiers secured a historic victory and strengthened India’s invincibility.
Meanwhile, the Eastern Command of the Indian Army marked Vijay Diwas with a Military Tattoo in Kolkata. The Army also shared messages recalling the historic liberation of Bangladesh, describing the victory as one of the most decisive in military history.
In a social media post, the Indian Army said Vijay Diwas symbolises the decisive triumph of the Armed Forces in the 1971 war, during which over 93,000 Pakistani soldiers surrendered, marking one of the largest military surrenders in world history.
