Authorities have sealed a private girls’ madrasa in Bongaigaon after two minor students accused a teacher of sexual abuse
A private girls’ madrasa in Assam’s Bongaigaon district has been sealed after two minor students alleged that they were sexually abused by a teacher, triggering a police investigation under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and sparking widespread concern over the safety of children in residential educational institutions.
The accused teacher has been arrested, while police continue to investigate the allegations. Officials have appealed for restraint, stating that the matter is under active investigation and that all evidence will be examined in accordance with the law.
As the investigation progressed, district authorities inspected the madrasa and found alleged irregularities in its functioning. According to officials, the institution was operating without mandatory recognition and did not possess a UDISE code, which is used to identify recognised educational institutions. Authorities also noted the absence of CCTV surveillance and initiated a review of the institution’s records and compliance with applicable regulations.
The administration subsequently ordered the premises sealed and evacuated all 149 girl students, who were handed over to their parents or guardians in the presence of district officials.
The incident triggered protests outside the madrasa, with local residents demanding strict action against those responsible if the allegations are substantiated. Security personnel were deployed to prevent the situation from escalating further.
The case has once again brought the focus back on child safety in residential educational institutions. Child rights advocates have repeatedly stressed that schools, hostels and religious educational institutions must maintain robust safeguarding mechanisms, including background verification of staff, CCTV coverage in common areas, prompt reporting of complaints and regular inspections by the authorities.
Under the POCSO Act, any allegation of sexual abuse involving a minor must be investigated promptly, and institutions are legally obligated to report such incidents to law enforcement. Failure to report can also attract penal consequences under the law.
The Assam Police have stated that the investigation is continuing and that appropriate legal action will be taken based on the findings.
