Minor assaulted after visiting local shop
Police said the girl had gone to buy biscuits when the incident allegedly took place
A 70-year-old shop owner has been arrested in the Namrup area of Assam’s Dibrugarh district for the alleged sexual assault and rape of a seven-year-old girl, local police confirmed.
The accused, identified as Khalidur Rahman (also known as Mussa), was taken into custody on Saturday, May 16, following a formal complaint registered by the victim’s family.
The Incident
According to police reports, the incident occurred on May 14 at the Dilli Tea Estate, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Namrup police station. The minor had reportedly gone to a small shop near her residence, run by Rahman, to purchase biscuits.
Family members and representatives from the Namrup Aanchalik Gorkha Students Union alleged that the accused took advantage of the child’s innocence, dragging her into his home where he molested, sexually harassed, and raped her.
Delayed Disclosure Due to Threats
The victim did not immediately inform her parents about the assault due to threats made by the accused. However, unable to bear the trauma of the ordeal, she later confided in her mother, prompting the family to approach the authorities.
Legal Action and Current Status
Following the complaint, the Namrup police registered Case No. 11/2026 against Rahman under Section 65 (2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), read with Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
The minor has undergone a mandatory medical examination and has since been moved to a Child Care Home in Dibrugarh for support and rehabilitation.
Meanwhile, the Namrup Aanchalik Gorkha Students Union has strongly condemned the heinous crime, issuing a statement demanding strict and exemplary punishment for the accused.
