Kuldeep Sengar bail triggers anger, survivor to approach Supreme Court

Protests erupted outside the Delhi High Court on Friday following its decision to grant conditional bail to expelled BJP leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the Unnao rape case. Demonstrators gathered near the court premises, raising slogans and voicing strong opposition to the suspension of Sengar’s life sentence.

The protest came amid serious concerns expressed by the Unnao rape survivor and her family, who said the bail order had left them fearful and vulnerable. Reacting to the decision, the survivor told Hindustan Times that she was “extremely upset” and felt “extremely unsafe” after learning of the conditions imposed by the court. Her mother, speaking to ANI, strongly opposed the bail and said the family would approach the Supreme Court. “We have lost faith in the high court. If we don’t get justice in the Supreme Court, we will go to another country,” she said, demanding the strictest punishment for those responsible for her husband’s death.

Visuals from the scene showed security personnel asking protesters to disperse, warning that legal action would be taken if the demonstration continued. Women’s rights activist Yogita Bhayana, who joined the protest, said women across the country were deeply hurt by the suspension of a rapist’s sentence and that justice would be sought from the same court where the alleged injustice occurred.

Kuldeep Sengar was convicted in December 2019 and sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a 17-year-old girl in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao district in 2017. Earlier this week, the Delhi High Court suspended his sentence, observing that he had already served more than the maximum punishment prescribed under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Although the court barred Sengar from entering a five-kilometre radius of the survivor’s residence, the order reignited fears within her family.

The survivor cited past incidents to explain her apprehension, recalling a 2019 car crash that killed two of her relatives and her lawyer. She alleged that Sengar had orchestrated the attack through his associates. Now 24 and living in Delhi, the survivor has been provided court-ordered security and is accompanied by five to 11 CRPF personnel at all times. However, her mother said the security cover extended to her and her three children was withdrawn after March this year.
