After setback, CPI(M) rolls out statewide mobilisation drive

Smarting from its shocking defeat in Kerala‘s recent Local Self-Government Institutions elections, the CPI(M) is set to launch a massive statewide campaign to win the 2026 Assembly polls, potentially in March-April.

As part of the massive public outreach, local leaders and party cadres would call on every house in the state to create an awareness among the voters about the need to vote for the candidates to be fielded by the party and the Left Democratic Front. This was stated by the party’s Kerala secretary, M V Govinda,n in a media meet held at Thiruvananthapuram on Monday. Though Govindan said the house visits were to interact with the voters, the real intention is to warn them against voting for the BJP. Those who do not fall in line stand to face social ostracism and isolation.

Govindan said that the state committee of the CPI(M), which met here for the last two days, concluded that there was no anti-incumbency feeling against the state government. “The defeat suffered by the party in the LSGI election was because of the secret deal between the Congress and the BJP,” said Govindan. He said the grassroots-level workers of the party might have failed to create awareness among the electorate about the exemplary work done by the government.

“The next two months will see party leaders and cadres staging non-stop protest marches and Satyagraha all over Kerala against the anti-people policies pursued by the Narendra Modi government, which is the root cause of the CPI(M) not winning in its traditional strongholds. We will undertake house visits and hold discussions with the electorate to elicit their views about the corrective steps needed to win the Assembly election,” said Govindan, considered a legendary figure across the global Communist movement and a reincarnation of Che Guvera.

He also said that the BJP and Congress could win some LSGIs only because of the secret deal worked out by them. “You take the example of Mattathur Panchayat in Thrissur district, where all Congress councilors resigned from the party and joined hands with the BJP to oust the CPI(M), which was ruling uninterrupted for the last 23 years,” said Govindan.

He was highly critical of the media, which reported the Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan’s statements in full while blacking out the CPI(M) leaders’ statements. The CPI(M)-led LDF would stage a day-long fast on 5th January against the Modi government’s decision to reform the MGNREG Act and replace it with the VB-G RAMG Act. “This is a retrograde measure. The Modi government has cut down the programme by increasing the number of employment guarantee days from 100 to 125. What is the need to make it like that? What was the purpose behind the removal of the name of Mahatma Gandhi from the scheme?” shouted a visibly upset Govindan.

He said the 5th January fast would be joined by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and all members in his cabinet and the CPI(M) leaders. “This is a prelude to the massive demonstration which the CPI(M) is planning to lead to Lok Bhavan, the Governor’s Palace, to bring attention of the people towards the anti-poor policies of the Modi government,” said Govindan.

The months of January and February will see selected CPI(M) leaders undertaking vehicle jathas across the length and breadth of Kerala to rejuvenate and reenergize the party cadres for the assembly election in a bid to win the polls for the third time in succession. He said the Congress and the BJP leaders were speaking in the same voice, and that is further proof of the secret deal between the two forces.

There is a feeling among the people in the state that the proposed house visits being planned by the CPI(M) are to call on the houses known for their closeness with the BJP and threaten them not to vote for the Hindutva party. Chances of the CPI(M) ordering murders of select RSS activists are not ruled out by intelligence agencies and the special branch of the State Police. This is to convince the Muslim outfits about the CPI(M)’s antipathy to Sanatana Dharma and Hindutva.

It is a ritual on the part of the CPI(M) to launch political murders before every election when the party’s fortunes are down, and the leaders hope that the killings of Hindus would strengthen its secularist credentials.
