Tehran warns of ‘all-out war’ if Supreme Leader is targeted
US President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning to Iran amid ongoing unrest in the country, saying the “whole country is going to get blown up” if the situation escalates further.
Speaking in an interview with News Nation, Trump responded to Tehran’s warning of an “all-out war” and reiterated his hardline stance against the Iranian leadership.
“I’ve left notification. If anything ever happens… the whole country is going to get blown up,” Trump said, adding, “If anything happens, we’re going to wipe them off the face of the earth.”
The remarks come days after Trump openly called for a regime change in Iran.
Iran warns US against action on Supreme Leader
Iran on Tuesday issued a fresh warning to the United States, cautioning Trump against any action targeting Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
“Trump knows that if any hand of aggression is extended toward our leader, we will not only cut that hand but also set fire to their world,” Iranian armed forces spokesperson Gen Abolfazl Shekarchi was quoted as saying by the Associated Press.
Trump, speaking earlier to Politico, described Khamenei as “a sick man” and accused the Iranian leadership of killing its own people.
Unrest continues in Iran
Iran has been gripped by widespread protests since late December, triggered by surging inflation and the sharp decline of the national currency, the rial.
According to the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency, at least 4,519 people have been killed and more than 26,300 arrested during the unrest.
Iranian authorities have blamed the United States and Israel for fomenting instability and fueling protests, an allegation Washington has denied.
