Special Cell registers FIR under BNS sections after SFJ leader issues video threats targeting Delhi ahead of January 26

The Delhi Police on Friday registered an FIR against Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, leader of the banned Khalistani outfit Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), over alleged threats to create unrest in the national capital ahead of Republic Day celebrations on January 26.

According to officials, the FIR has been lodged by the Special Cell of Delhi Police under Sections 196, 197, 152 and 61 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). These sections pertain to criminal conspiracy, acts threatening India’s sovereignty, unity and integrity, and offences linked to national security.

    Video threats trigger police action

Police sources said the case was registered after a video circulated on social media in which Pannun allegedly issued threats against Delhi, claiming that pro-Khalistan posters had been placed in several localities, including Rohini and Dabri, by so-called sleeper cells.

However, after verification and searches at the locations mentioned, the Special Cell said no such posters have been found so far. Investigations are ongoing to determine the authenticity, origin and intent behind the video.

Embassy vandalism in Croatia adds to concerns

The FIR comes amid heightened concern over Khalistani activities abroad. On Thursday, India strongly condemned the trespassing of the Indian Embassy in Croatia and the vandalisation of the national flag by Khalistani activists.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said those responsible for the incident must be identified and held accountable. The incident occurred at the Indian Embassy in Zagreb, just days ahead of the India–EU Summit scheduled in New Delhi on January 27.

A video shared online by Pannun showed a Khalistani activist allegedly entering the embassy premises, removing the Indian tricolour and replacing it with a Khalistan flag. The video claimed the act took place on January 22.

“We condemn the incident of trespassing and vandalism at our embassy in Zagreb, Croatia, by anti-India elements,” the MEA said in a statement.

    India flags global Khalistani threat

In the video, Pannun made further provocative remarks, claiming that New Delhi would be a ‘target’ on Republic Day. He has been designated a terrorist under Indian law, and India has repeatedly raised concerns with countries including Canada, the US, UK and Australia over SFJ’s activities.

Authorities say SFJ-linked actions include threats, vandalism of Indian missions, intimidation of diplomats, and attempts to incite violence.
