Calls for increasing sanctioned IPS strength from 83 to 105 amid rising security challenges
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Wednesday met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi and urged the Centre to allocate more Indian Police Service (IPS) officers to the state, citing growing policing requirements and emerging security challenges.
During the meeting, the chief minister highlighted that Telangana’s policing responsibilities have expanded significantly in recent years and require a stronger IPS cadre to manage administrative and security demands effectively.
Delay in cadre review
Reddy pointed out that the first cadre review after the formation of Telangana was conducted in 2016. The next review, which was scheduled for 2021, was delayed and finally completed in 2025. However, the review sanctioned only seven additional IPS officers.
The chief minister requested the Union government to increase the sanctioned IPS strength in Telangana from the current 83 officers to 105. He also urged that the third cadre review, scheduled for 2026, be carried out on time without further delay.
Rising security and administrative challenges
Reddy told the Union Home Minister that the state is facing several new-age security challenges, including cybercrime, drug trafficking and white-collar crimes. These threats require a larger and more specialised policing structure.
He also noted that administrative pressure on the police force has increased due to the reorganisation of the Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Malkajgiri police commissionerates, the proposed Future City Commissionerate, and the rapid population growth in Hyderabad.
Maoist surrenders discussed
The chief minister also briefed Shah about developments related to Maoist surrenders and rehabilitation in the state.
According to Reddy, policing has improved significantly in Telangana over the past two years, with 591 Maoists surrendering and joining the mainstream. He said several senior Maoist leaders have recently laid down arms and the state government is providing compensation and rehabilitation assistance in accordance with policy guidelines.
Request for development assistance
Apart from security matters, Reddy also sought financial assistance from the Centre for development projects in backward regions of Telangana.
Senior officials present during the meeting included Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister V. Seshadri, Director General of Police B. Shivdhar Reddy, Intelligence Additional DGP Vijay Kumar and SIB IGP B. Sumathi.
