Revanth Reddy demands apology from KCR, dismissal of BRS MLC over abusive remarks against assembly speaker
The opening day of the Telangana Legislative Assembly’s monsoon session witnessed high drama and fierce political confrontations as ruling Congress leaders clashed with the opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) over alleged abusive and derogatory remarks made against Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar.
The controversy erupted at the Assembly gates when police halted BRS legislators wearing black t-shirts with anti-government slogans from entering the premises. During a scuffle with security personnel, BRS MLC Thatha Madhusudhan (Tata Madhu) allegedly made derogatory comments against the Speaker. Congress leaders further claimed that Madhu remarked that BRS President and former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) was skipping Assembly proceedings because he did not want to address the Speaker as “sir.”
Reacting strongly inside the House, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy launched a scathing attack on the BRS leadership, terming the comments an direct insult not just to the constitutional authority of the Chair, but to the entire Dalit community, as Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar belongs to the Dalit community.
“This behavior is an affront to democratic institutions. The House must take a strict stance to send a strong message to society,” CM Revanth Reddy stated on the floor of the House, demanding the immediate expulsion of BRS MLC Tata Madhu and calling on KCR to tender an unconditional apology.
Ministers and Dalit legislators from the Congress party, accompanied by key cabinet members including Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, Duddilla Sridhar Babu, and Seethakka, later met Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar to express solidarity. The Speaker was reportedly distressed over the personal nature of the remarks.
Outside the Assembly, protests escalated as Congress workers burned an effigy of BRS MLC Tata Madhu near Gandhi Bhavan, demanding his immediate removal from the Legislative Council. BJP legislators also joined in condemning the remarks, with BJP MLA Alleti Maheshwar Reddy demanding that KCR clarify his stance and apologize.
Following hours of heated debate, Legislative Affairs Minister D. Sridhar Babu announced that a formal decision regarding action against the BRS MLC would be taken on Tuesday. Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar subsequently adjourned the House for the day.
