Home minister launches campaign in Guwahati with roadshow ahead of April 9 voting

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday expressed confidence that the NDA will secure more than 90 seats in the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, saying voters want the alliance to return to power for a third consecutive term.

“The people of Assam are excited to bring the NDA government back for a third term and we will win over 90 seats in the assembly polls,” Shah told reporters during his two-day visit to the poll-bound state.

Roadshow and campaign events in Guwahati

Shah began his visit with a large roadshow in Guwahati, which started from Arya Vidyapeeth College field, passed through major city areas and concluded near Nepali Mandir.

He also attended a party meeting at the BJP’s state headquarters, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan, and is scheduled to address Vijay Sankalp Samaroh events in Dhekiajuli and Tihu while holding strategy meetings with party leaders.

Development under Modi and Sarma highlighted

Highlighting the NDA government’s record, Shah said significant development has taken place under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

He claimed that extremism and bomb blasts have declined in the state while infrastructure, healthcare and education facilities have expanded, making Assam a growing hub for the Northeast.

    Election battle intensifies

Campaigning has intensified after the Election Commission of India announced that polling will be held on April 9, with counting scheduled for May 4.

In the outgoing assembly, the Bharatiya Janata Party holds 64 seats, while allies including the Asom Gana Parishad and United People’s Party Liberal are part of the ruling coalition.

The opposition includes the Indian National Congress, the All India United Democratic Front, and the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

This will be the first assembly election in Assam after the 2023 delimitation exercise, making the contest politically significant.
